ProQuest announces Shibbolethâ„¢ support of the DFN-AAI Federation in Germany for Chadwyck-Healey resources
Divided line

Cambridge, United Kingdom, September 16, 2009 - ProQuest is pleased to announce that key Chadwyck-Healey products are now compliant with the DFN-AAI Federation, affirming ProQuest’s commitment to work with emerging library standards globally. The Shibboleth system is an increasingly popular standards-based, open source software package for web single sign-on allowing library sites to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources.

‘Chadwyck-Healey products are an integral daily reference point for many students and scholars in Germany and we are pleased to provide a more streamlined experience for the user in this latest development, as well as assisting information professionals in the complex area of identity management’ said Mary Sauer-Games, Vice President, Higher Education Publishing, ProQuest.

The Chadwyck-Healey product line includes key digital resources for students, scholars, and teachers of the humanities and social sciences, as well as extensive reference sources. The Shibboleth compliant resources now include Literature Online, Early English Books Online, British Periodicals, Periodicals Archive Online, Periodicals Index Online, House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections, American Film Index, Annual Register, Archive Finder, Documents on British Policy Overseas, FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals, Film Index International, History Study Center, International Index to Music Periodicals, International Index to Performing Arts, The John Johnson Collection, KnowUK and NewsUK, Monthly Catalog of US Government Publications and Paley Center Seminars.

Shibboleth overcomes the complexity of managing passwords, as well as issues with authentication technologies such as IP authentication and Athens, enabling single sign-on and federated administration of access to restricted resources. The user’s site and target site negotiate based on attributes (for example, a student in a particular course, or a particular faculty’s members). This approach, rather than working with the unique identity of the user, allows for more active privacy management.

The support for the DFN-AAI Federation follows up on the support already offered for the UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research and the InCommon Federation in the US. Other federations will be supported at a later date.
