CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, June 6, 2006 - Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest Information and Learning,
announced today that it has received CONSER Affiliate member status
as selected by the Library of Congress' Serial Record Division. This
honour recognises Serials Solutions' contributions to the library industry
and enables the company to improve the quality of CONSER records used
worldwide. As a CONSER member Serials Solutions can enhance and edit certain parts of the MARC records that are often overlooked and require attention. For example, Serials Solutions will make corrections to Library of Congress record control numbers and also transcribe ISSN data for non-US/non-Canada serials on appropriate CONSER records. It is envisioned that Serials Solutions' own cataloguers will be able to make other changes to records, including those that require more precise verification and other record enhancements based on data supplied by Serials Solutions. “In linking bibliographic records with metadata from electronic resource vendors, Serials Solutions has been able to detect record control number errors in linking fields and identify other issues of concern pertaining to CONSER records,” commented Les Hawkins, CONSER Coordinator for the Library of Congress. “As a CONSER member, Serials Solutions can now make corrections directly in OCLC and make other significant contributions benefiting libraries.” “Our attention to data accuracy, interest in serials cataloguing, and commitment to quality service played an important part in our application's acceptance,” commented Peter McCracken, MLS, Serials Solutions' director of electronic content management. “We are proud to be a CONSER member and we'll continue to deliver accurate serials data and improved access for libraries worldwide.” CONSER has started to implement a multi-phased training program for Serials Solutions' cataloguers. Serials Solutions' staff will also participate within national and international cooperative bibliographic programs and have the opportunity to influence policies on bibliographic control of serials.
