CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, October 1, 2005 - ProQuest Information and Learning today announced the launch its significantly
revised periodicals databases. Changes to the PCI and PCI Full Text
family will be the biggest since the launch of PCI Full Text in 2000
and is the culmination of almost two years of research, planning and
development. One of the most obvious differences will be the change in product names. PCI becomes Periodicals Index Online while PCI Full Text becomes Periodicals Archive Online. . As well as underlining the scale of revision to these databases, the relaunch of these two significant resources enables ProQuest to put the citation index and collection of archival digitised journals on an equal footing and better define each purpose and role, more than a decade after PCI first launched as Cumulative Contents Index. The scale of enhancements is linked to the ProQuest vision to examine the requirements of researchers, librarians, educators and students, and to utilise new ideas and capabilities to take its databases even further in meeting these needs.. ProQuest has been involved in looking at a wide range of existing customer feedback, testing the existing databases, surveying hundreds of users of many different kinds and conducting detailed interviews across Europe, North America and Australasia. Throughout, teams have chosen not only to look at PCI and PCI Full Text as they currently exist, but also to return to first principles, to ask people what they needed from services like these. “The result was a set of clear opportunities for developing PCI and PCI Full Text, incorporating ideas both big and small, in such a way as to bring real, additional benefits to a suite of services that have already made themselves invaluable to academic study,” said Stephen Brooks, Publisher, ProQuest. Changing the names of PCI and PCI Full Text, and the relationship between the two, is something that will be assisted and reinforced by a new look and visual design. The interfaces for Periodicals Index Online and Periodicals Archive Online have been redesigned, from the ground up, and not simply for cosmetic reasons. The new look interfaces will make the most of the new features and tools that are being introduced and to ensure they are intuitive and easy to use.
